Zipper Bootcamp: Mastering Zippers for Bag Making

If zippers have ever made you hesitate before starting a bag, this class is for you.

In this hands-on, skill-focused workshop, we will break down multiple ways to install zippers in bags and practice them through a series of small pouches and a large tote. You will work with different types of zippers, explore various installation methods, and build real confidence through repetition.

This is not about finishing one big bag. It is about strengthening your technique so that future bag projects feel smoother, cleaner, and far less intimidating.

During these two 3.5 -hour sessions, you will:

• Install zippers using several different construction methods
• Work with different zipper types and understand when to use each
• Practice techniques that prevent wavy zippers and bulky corners
• Improve topstitching accuracy and overall zipper placement
• Build muscle memory through repetition and guided instruction

By the end of class, you'll have a collection of technique samples, a stronger understanding of zipper construction, and the confidence to incorporate zippers into future bag projects.

This workshop is ideal for adventurous beginners who have basic sewing machine experience and for bag makers who want to refine and strengthen their zipper skills.

⭐️ Registration is required. The class fee includes two specialty zippers that you will need, though additional materials are required. A complete supply list will be sent upon registration.

Patterns Used

Students will create four projects while learning different zipper techniques:

• Pop-Star Zipper Pouch (Glue & Stitch) – PDF included with registration
• Lola Pouch (Sotak Handmade) – PDF pattern required
• Tiny Tote (Craft Owl Handmade)
• Lucky Charm Tote (Craft Owl Handmade)

Paper copies of the Craft Owl Handmade patterns are available for purchase if you prefer not to use PDFs. They may be shipped to you or picked up before class.

Sewing Machine: Students are encouraged to bring their own sewing machine if they have one. A limited number of sewing machines are available to rent for class. If you need to reserve a machine, please add a Sewing Machine Rental to your cart when registering.
